Maybe it was because everyone was standing to sing or maybe it was because we were up front and all of the voices came from behind us. Or maybe it was because everyone realized what they were singing but the power was electrifying.
And when we sang the final verse (yes there is more than one) I was literally fighting back the tears.
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

This- this is what our country was founded on, why it was fought for- what it was fought for.
I truly believe this a heaven preserved land, persevered for us by our Father in Heaven, preserved to be a place of freedom founded on our trust in God.
And it terrifies me that this trust is being pushed out and lost more and more every single day. Will our country still be preserved for us if this trust is totally lost?

ReplyDeleteBeautiful. Hear, hear! I am so sick of people not appreciating their freedom, not accepting that this country was founded on religion and freedom and GOD, and so sick of our rights dwindling from uneducated, selfish Americans. It just makes me angry!
ReplyDeleteWow! Beautifully said, friend. The older I get, the longer I'm married to a military man, the more I appreciate our freedoms. And because we know what true freedom is in God, we can only want more freedoms for our beloved country.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful post! It's rare to hear that second verse- I think b/c it's so God-focused and our country has gone away from that, sadly.
ReplyDeleteWe closed with the anthem. And I feel the exact same way about it. My heart feels like it will explode by the end. And I can't believe people are trying push God away from our country when all they have to do is visit our nation's capital. They will see our forefather's belief in Him.

It makes me sad that children don't grow up saying the Pledge and learning the national anthem like we did. Every single day we recited and sang those in school.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what areas of the country don't do this but my kids' elementary/intermediate schools lead the Pledge everyday and they sing the anthem!

ReplyDeleteThat has always been my favorite verse! I especially love where it says, "when our cause it is just." Unfortunately our foreign policy doesn't always bode well for others who love their land and families just like we do. Sometimes I think Americans think we're the only patriotic ones. Church members should remember, too, that we are a global church.
ReplyDeleteWe had the best speaker (Full bird Colonel) at girl's camp tell us that the "Love it or leave it" policy of many in our country is wrong. If you love your country, you will try to affect change to stamp out injustice and not just see our country as doing no wrong. I loved that.
I love my country! But just like loving a family member and not all their choices, I feel the same about our country. I don't like all of our decisions, regardless of which party brought it forth.
