Proud Mommy Moments: Fighting the Whine

Ready for the good the bad and the funny?  It's Proud Mommy Moment Time! This is your weekly chance to brag about the awesome things your kids, nieces, nephews, etc did and no one will judge because we told you to. Or you can do the opposite and tell us about those moments your kids made you so "proud"- i.e. something totally embarrassing but hey it makes for great blog material!

Every Thursday!

Chances are you are writing something about your kids anyway- so most likely it will fit. Please grab the button for your post.  My co-host  Kmama is back!! So make sure you head over to her blog to see her post (get to see cute baby pictures on her blog as an added bonus)

Whining.  Nobody likes it and every person kid is bound to do it at some point.  The trick is to learn how to stop it fast in its tracks.

Thankfully, Eric has come up with a clever solution.

The whining usually begins with my name becoming a bad word. You know how it is.  When the word that we once longed for our baby to first say becomes a 3 or more syllable drawn-out screech of a sound "M-a-ooooo-mmmm!!!!!!"

Last week some of the whining involved things like:
"M-A-OMMMM Alex won't give me my toy back."
"M-A-OMMMMM Lucas won't let me play anymore!"
"M-A-OOOOMM Alex is sitting on my head and won't move."

So what is Eric's awesome solution?

Well he whines back.
"M-A-OOOMMMM" one of the kids begin.
Eric: "AAA-LEX Mom is sitting on that chair."
Eric: "L-uuucas Mom has a head"

And of course the kids are soon laughing and trying to add their just as ridiculous statements.  And it works-- they forgot why they were whining and are now laughing together.

One night as we were all gathered together in the living room, the kids were all sitting inside a little tent turned sideways and the whining began. "M-A--OOMMM!  They won't leave and I wanted to be in here myself!" Lucas whined.

So Eric began with his whining.  Soon the kids were laughing and Alex tried to join in.

Alex: "M-A-OOOMMMM-- Dad did... Dad did...." she paused trying to think of something clever.
Ryder: "A Poop!!"

And yes, we all lost it.  Ah my toddler, always the little comedian.

What is your Proud Mommy Moment this week?

  1. What a great solution and a way to show them what it feels like to hear the grumbling!

  2. That is so funny! I admire your family for taking something aggravating and turning it into entertainment! I read somewhere once that studies have found that whining is one of the top annoying sounds ever. I believe it!

  6. Hmm.... how will this work on tweens/teens? I'm guessing that it won't go over as well as it does for younger kids.

  8. I've been known to whine back at my kids. To show them how annoying it is. I don't think they get it.

  9. So funny! We do the whining back at the kids too. Or, I will kind of pantomime whatever they are whining about, by making a ridiculous face and moving my lips all around. It always makes them laugh.

  17. Oh gosh, the whining is out of control at my house. I need to try this. My kids love coming up with crazy things to say so it would be good. Let me know what you do when you tell your kids to do something and they respond with the answer THEY WANT. "Mommy, can I have a snack", I say Not right now or whatever. They immediate say YESSSSSSSSSSSSS. I say No, Not right now. YEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. Its like we are arguing now over who can say Yes or NO the longest. AGH!

  18. Today the whining was out of control. So much to the point I had to put Faye in time out. Sigh. I need a genius to figure out how to get her to stop because seriously, that high pitched screeching has got to stop. And Jeffrey thinks it is the cutest thing in the world, so just laughs while I try to pull my hair out. Sigh. Lucky you.
