I love getting lost in a good book, one that makes me feel and think and come away feeling happy.
I recently read Whisper Island by Anola Pickett.
WHISPER ISLAND SUMMARY
Set on a fictional island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, WHISPER ISLAND tells the story of twelve-year-old Primmy Hopkins. Primmy’s dream is to join the US Life-Savers Service and rescue shipwreck victims. There's one problem: it’s 1913 and no females are allowed in the service. Besides that, no one approves her career choice.
Her mother, who left the island when Primmy was three, has had little contact with her daughter. When Primmy’s invited to visit her mother on the mainland, she wonders what this meeting will bring. Will her mother approve her career goal? Will she see Primmy as everyone else seems to: a chubby "dumpling" who loves to get up to mischief? Most of all, will she explain why she left her only child?
I like that this book was set in a different time period from books I usually read. A time where life was a lot simplier but also a lot harder.
I found myself immediately liking Primmy's character and rooting for her; wanting more for her as she wants for herself. The book seems very believable and really felt like it could be someone's life.
The story moves quickly, the book is just 229 pages long. There are many characters, including her brothers, who are not expounded upon a lot but it doesn't take away from the book as it really is focused on Primmy.
I enjoyed Primmy's innocence that seemed appropriate for her age but as the book progresses she does grow and learn some hard lessons. The book ended with good closure, though I would happily read a sequel if there was ever one written as I really did grow to like Primmy's character and would love to see what happens as she grows.
This book is great for anyone, even kids as young as 8 may enjoy it and is a clean book free of language and sexual references.
