First Friend

"Did you know Haley has chocolate chips at her house?" Eric asked me when he came down from putting Ryder to bed.   "And that she and Ryder like to go in the closet and turn off the light and use just a flashlight."

"Oh really?" I said.  "I knew about the chocolate chips, but not the closet."

Haley is Ryder's first real friend.   She is the daughter of my friend Megan who watches Ryder once a week so I can volunteer in my kids' classes.   Haley is almost a year older than Ryder and horrifically shy in front of, well just about anyone, but she and Ryder have formed a special bond.

"He he was pretending to call her today." I told Eric.  "He also told me today that he doesn't need to wear shoes outside since Haley doesn't wear shoes."

We both had a chuckle then I sighed as I know what is happening next week.

Ryder's first real friend is moving.

With my husband's job, we move a lot and so we have left many friends, I am not used to being on the other end.   This will be my second good friend who moved away within this last year.

"When am I going to Haley's house?" Ryder will often ask me.  "Did you know Haley doesn't wear shoes outside?  Haley is a grill (girl)"   Lately all Ryder has been talking about is Haley.

We are keeping our fingers crossed that they will be able to move back in a couple of years, Megan's husband actually works for the same company as Eric so there is a chance of that.  I just wonder if in two years when Ryder is 5 and Haley is 6 if they will have that special bond again.  Or if Ryder will be starting to think "grills" are gross.

That first friend... will always hold a special place in your heart.

  2. How sweet! But sad that they are moving! I don't remember who my first friend was as a lived in an area with a plethora of kids my age, but I remember my first best friend. His name was Patrick and we did everything together in kindergarten. We were inseparable. And then he moved. I was heartbroken. I hope Ryder handles it better than I did!

    1. He was definitely very sad today after their last play date, but I think he will be fine in the end… just need to find him another friend stat so he has someone to play with

  3. aww this makes me sad, maybe because I have had a hard week dealing with things but I feel bad for Ryder...poor Buddy is losing his friend! Maybe you can get him into good old fashion letter writing or something - bring back pen pals. My daughter has a pen pal in the states and its nice to see that because everything is so electronic now!

    1. That would be fun, expect he can barely write his name yet.. but might be good practice or could draw pictures :)

  4. Oh Sweet Ryder...it's so cool that he has learned about having a friend. Hopefully she can move back someday. My earliest memory of having a friend was a girl down the street four houses, Mary. We played everyday until Jr. High when it was discovered that there were other people in the world. An unusual experience and another story...

    1. Yes, I had one of my same friends until she moved to other side of town right around junior high time and it was just never quite the same after that. Though we have since reconnected a few times as adults.

  7. Aww, I hope that Ryder and Haley are able to stay friends despite the distance, and that someday when they are reunited, he doesn't mind hanging out with a "grill"!! My first friend was my friend Stacy (who I see has already commented on this post!) - and I'm very lucky to still have her close by and still one of my best friends!!

    1. Love that both you and Stacy commented! They hopefully will be able to move back in a couple of years, if they do it will be interesting if they can still be such close friends at 5 and 6 as they are at 3 and 4.

  12. Oh that is so hard. Losing best buds is hard. I remember when my daughter was 5, her two best friends moved in the same week. She was miserable. One moved back eventually and the other comes back to visit her father (divorce and mom moved to another state) so she sees her sometimes when she comes back here and they keep in touch with social media. I hope your friend moves back!

  13. This is such a sweet story. It hits really close to home. All of my son's friends are other expatriate children, and even though the parents all work for the same company, we never know where we are going to be and when we are leaving. I hope that when they see each other again they will reconnect.

    1. Yes! That would definitely put things up in the air. This family works for the same company as my husband and so yea, we don’t really go international but we definitely all could move at any time

  14. Ahhh boo! That's so sad. And really cute too. I remember when Ethan's first friend moved away too. So sad and hard. And then a new friend moved right next door! I hope that happens to Ryder too!!

    1. Well I don't think our next door neighbors are moving anytime soon, but maybe across the street at least :)

  15. So sweet and so sad at the same time. Hopefully they will be reunited in the future. That would make one fantastic future love story!

  16. That's so sad that his friend is moving. Piglet's first real friend is the daughter of a military family (a grill too, lol!) and we know they will only be here for a maximum of 2 years, or possibly less. It's hard because the mom and I have become very close, and our kids play at least once a week, if not more. I will definitely miss them!!

    1. Oh so sorry! We aren’t military but with my husband’s work we often move that often, this family works for the same company as my husband and yep got moved on to the next job

  17. :'( So sad. He will make many new friends both boys and "grills." It sucks to move, and it sucks when friends move.
