My First Valentine

With Valentine's day quickly approaching, I couldn't help but think back to my first Valentine.  I was in grade school, in 5th grade.  I don't really remember how it all happened, who said they like who first but somehow I had my first "boyfriend".  We were "going out", a term that drove my mother crazy as where we we going, to recess?

We would sometimes call each other on the phone, would hang out at recess, but never dared to hold hands and definitely did not kiss.

Though actually, there was the one time we held hands at the monthly skating party when pressured by all of our friends to skate together during the couples skate.

Mostly, I think I was in it for the presents.  Valentines Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter- and and every little excuse to give each other a present.  I remember the box of chocolates on Valentines Day, the Troll doll with green hair on St. Patrick's day, and a little stuffed bunny on Easter.
The school year ended and I went about my summer as usual not talking to my boyfriend once.   The new school year began, we were the first 6th graders at the grade schools, having just switched it from the junior high, so we were once again the big men on campus.  I ended up in the same class as my boyfriend.  His best friend asked if we were still "going out".  "Umm yea, I guess" I replied, and so our relationship continued.

It think it might have been around Halloween, the first Holiday back together after this new school year and he did not get me a present!

We broke up after that.

Thankfully my relationships got a little less superficial over the years.

Who was your first Valentine?

  8. I wish I could remember things like this about myself! I have absolutely no clue. I couldn't even tell you what my boyfriends in high school got me for Valentine's Day, much less the 5th grade! Do you really still have the troll he got you? :o)

  9. hahahhaa soooo cute! I actually don't think I had a Valentine or was going out with anyone until like high school when we actually went out :). In 3rd grade though a boy gave me a card that said I love you on it with a big red heart. Scared me to death so I erased his name and my name (written in pencil) and gave it to my parents :)

  12. That's really cute. We did the whole trolls thing at primary school age too.

My first valentine/boyfriend was at primary school. He basically had a 'girlfriend' for each day of the week at school. I was Fridays. I think he gave me a kingsize marble he won, and a valentine's card. It probably only lasted 3 weeks, before he realised having all the girlfriends was costing him too much pocket money!

  14. That's pretty cute. ♥ My first Valentine...oy. Well, my first boyfriend dumped me 2 days beforehand, my 2nd didn't last long enough to get there, my third was my fiance who dumped me 3 days beforehand then insisted on coming to my college's Valentine's banquet anyway as my "friend", so...that means my first actual Valentine was my husband, at the time my fiance (mark 2). So even though he was my 4th boyfriend, it's nice to say he's my only ever Valentine. ♥

  15. I remember WANTING this guy to be my Valentine in third grade. He had nice hair and great penmanship (didn't take much back then, I guess). We actually became good friends all throughout junior and high school. Even after we went out separate ways to college, we kept in touch. He never knew how I felt.

    1. Awe that is kind of sad he never knew how you felt! Sounds like he ended up being a great friend though. Too funny about the penmanship.
