First Day of School

Yesterday was my kids first day of school.  We took our traditional back to school pictures.

They were excited to go

They both had great days and we started a new tradition when they got home.

Usually when they get home from school, they drop their bags, turn on the TV and take a half hour break.

They can still get that break, but first they have to come sit with me at the table (while eating a treat, so not a bad thing) and tell me at least three things about their day.  It gets so easy to get caught up in our own things and I really want them to get used to telling me what is going on in their lives when they are young.  That way when they are teenagers they will know that they are still going to have to tell me at least three things everyday.
What is your routine like after school?

  1. Good idea - we pick our daughter up at the after school daycare so on the 5 mins drive home, thats what I do, i ask her what she did, what she had for breakfast at breakfast club then when we get home, she starts homework while i get supper going!

  2. We always did most of talking in the car. It wasn't on purpose it's just what seemed to happen. I'm kind of sad now that they're driving that we don't have that time anymore. We don't have an official routine but it does seem to work out where they all hang out downstairs for a few minutes talking about their day. It's nice. I just have to remind myself to not get caught up with stuff I have to get done and participate in the conversation!

  3. Loved seeing the pics...and I LOVE the signs. After awhile it's hard to remember which one was a picture of which year. Ha Ha.... My fondest memories are of the half hour (or longer) after school when talking with/listening to my children. It was a ritual most pleasant! Good for you!

    1. Yes, I know I would never know what year they came from without the signs. It has been fun hearing what things they tell

  4. We don't have a routine just yet, but since Bear begins school in the fall, I suppose it's only a matter of time!!! eek!

    1. Yes, and Lucas is in 4th and we are just starting this now, so I am sure you will get a routine and then it will change again and again.. :) I can’t believe Bear is starting school! Such a bittersweet thing when your first starts.

  5. I love the idea of having them tell you three things about their day! That is a really good tradition to start. Especially because as they grow older they won't really want to do that as much ha ha. I'm glad that they were so excited for their first day of school!
