Why Sunday Will Always Be My Sabbath

I need a Sabbath Day.  I need the rest and reprieve.
A Day of Rest

Life is busy.

My week is filled with school pickups, helping kids with homework, running to four different soccer practices, pick up from chorus, dropping of at Scouts and Activity days not to mention running a household and everything it entails.

I am not complaining though, I love being able to be home with my kids, what I do miss is being home with my kids.

As my kids have gotten older and involved in more activities it feels like we are very rarely ever home. Currently during the school week Thursday is the only night of the week that we are all home at a normal dinner time.

Those Thursday's when we finally can have a normal dinner as a family, we cherish those times.  I even actually cook a real meal.

Even our Saturday's are filled with soccer and errands and occasional parties or events, but one day will always be our Sabbath.

One day a week will always be our chance to slow down, reflect and enjoy our time as a family.

Yes, even some Sunday's are busy with three hours of church and meetings in the areas we are serving in, but what my Sabbath will never be filled with is a list of errands to run, kids sporting events or hours of televised football.

Once upon a time things closed down on Sunday, all the shops, all the stores.  Now it is just another day, another day to get things done, run places and get in one more soccer game for the team.

When will the world realize it is enough?  It is too much.  Even if your aren't religious, we need a break.  A time to reconnect as a family.  Studies after studies have shown the benefit of strong families, yet everything society is pushing for and throwing at is pulling families apart.  Pressure to work longer and longer work hours, pressure to have kids in so many activities, pressure to alway be going, always entertaining, always moving at a fast pace right along with the technology.

We need a time to just be, a time for rest.  Life is busy, even almost frenzied at time.

The Sabbath day was given to us as a day of rest and let's embrace it.  Talk to your kids coaches, talk to your boss, talk to your friends and neighbors and let's make a push, a societal push to get a day of rest back.  A day that can heal and prepare us for the week ahead.  A day we can strengthen our families.  We can all work to make this change.  We need it.  Let's make it the Best Day!

Sunday will always be my Sabbath.

  1. I remember that feeling! I had a lot of kids and was so busy that Sunday was a reprieve from all of it. A great opportunity to say 'no' to social obligations and just have a quiet day to reflect on what really matters and enjoy family.

    1. Yes! Exactly! The constant running after school everywhere just gets overwhelming.

  2. We do need that day! Most Sundays here are very calm. We might have friends over to watch a football game or something, but no running around, just relaxing!

    1. Yes, it really is so nice and important to have a family day. I hate that so many things are trying to pull us away from the family and home.

  3. I agree! Sunday's should be reserved for our spiritual rejuvenation. To attend our church meetings and to spend time as a family. We love spending our time after church to visit our extended family members. I love that my kids are able to build those memories with their grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins!

    1. Oh so lucky! We don’t live very close to our family, in fact both grandparents are in other states, that sounds heavenly!

  4. We have had a pretty crazy year and I as I have reflected on some of the habits we formed when our children were younger, Sabbath Day observance is one that sticks out to me. Because we have this blessing of staying put and being together, I know I have at least one day that everyone will be home and hanging out together.

  5. Yup and you never get back all that time apart either. Okay I'm going to start crying now... ha! I'm struggling with the stresses of school right now and having a baby who I just want to eat up all my time with her.

  7. I love this post. I went to a RS meeting last week where they talked about things to do on the sabbath, I felt like a crappy mom because I really just like relaxed, laid back, game playing, eating dinner and resting sabbaths. I decided that just fine!
