Parenting Made Simple

Parenting is hard, but sometimes it can be really simple.

I don't have a lot of memories of the little things growing up- the day to day things.  I can't remember what my routine was when I got home from school, I don't remember what I would eat for breakfast or if I would have an after school snack, but one thing I do remember is the books.

I have always loved books, I had a big shelf full of them in my room.  It was this giant metal shelf that actually was quite good for climbing on too.  I would sometimes play library, making little slips of paper that I would stamp with the date of when it was due; something my kids now know nothing about with everything being computerized.

I just loved to read.

Fill your kids lives with books!

I remember my mom sitting down at night and reading to all of us kids.  I don't remember the books or details of the stories,  but I remember us all being there together as my mother read.  I loved it.

Every day we can make the decision of what we want to learn that day, what we want to teach and share.  As parents and mothers, it is so important that we include our children in this learning and growing, that we help facilitate it.

It is so easy to think that requires hours of time spent browsing Pinterest for amazing enriching activities to keep our kids entertained, but it can be simple.

As simple as sitting down at night and reading our kids a book.  As simple as making up a rhyming game while you all do the dishes together.  As simple as just talking and really being there with our kids.

When my oldest was just a baby, as he would babble to me, I would answer back with, "Really!  That is so interesting, please tell me more."   It probably looked quite silly, but I could see the connection, the understanding; he knew what he was 'saying' and while I did not, he knew I was there listening, speaking back.

Those first years of childhood are so important; it is easy to feel overwhelmed and tired and like you just want to scream at times!  But no matter how crazy it was, I didn't want to look back with regrets, regrets of things I should have taught, could have done.  It is the simple things.
