It is sometimes rare to find those books that would be great for tweens and teens and also really holds the attention of adults too. Topaz Reign, the second book in the Altered Stone Series by Teresa Richards is one of those book series for me.
I am going to do this review a little differently, as I don't want to give away anything, so will be recapping the first book a little and then giving you my thoughts about the whole series.
The Book:-- Emerald Bound
A princess, a pea, and a tower of mattresses. This is the sliver that survives of a story more nightmare than fairy tale.
Maggie Rhodes, high school junior and semi-reformed stalker, learns the tale’s true roots after a spying attempt goes awry and her best friend Kate ends up as the victim of an ancient curse. At the center of the curse lies an enchanted emerald that has been residing quietly in a museum for the past fifty years. Admirers of the gem have no idea that it feeds on life. Or that it’s found its next victim in Kate.
Enter Lindy, a school acquaintance who knows more than she’s letting on, and Garon, a handsome stranger claiming he knows how to help, and Maggie is left wondering who to trust and how to save her best friend before it’s too late.
If only Maggie knew her connection to the fairy tale was rooted far deeper than an endangered best friend.
My Series Review:
What if fairy tales are true, or at least partially? The Altered Stones series takes you on a fantasy adventure exploring the possibility that fairy tales may be true. I loved both Emerald Bound and Topaz Reign. Emerald Bound actually wrapped up pretty nicely on its own, but this second book is the perfect sequel jumping off where the first one left off but adding to the story wonderfully. The books are a mix of fantasy, magic, friendship and a little bit of romance (totally clean and good for the younger reader though).
I like how the author brings more science into the fantasy side of it, making it more scientific than just magical. The books also have a strong sense of family and ancestry that drew you even more into the story. There were points throughout both stories, were it felt like the story was going to take unrealistic directions, but then there were twists that made the story feel more authentic and possible. The climax at the story definitely kept me turning the pages and not wanting to put the book down.
I highly recommend this series. They are clean books, free from language and strong graphic imagery.
